I bought some fresh yeast from Ebay's
online-bakery-uk last week and as I had the family up for Sunday lunch decided to have a go at baking bread. I've done a wee bit of bread making in the past using powdered yeast and it's always been hit or miss so a wee bit sceptical. The seller includes a bread recipe so I followed it almost to the letter, substituting shortening ie lard or cooking oil for extra virgin olive oil, and halfed the recipe to make just one loaf.
First I sift the flour to get some air through it. It's strong white from Lidl.
I then add a wee glug of olive oil.
A couple of teaspoons of salt.
Yeast and sugar.
Warm water and mix all ingredients together, punch the hell out of it.
I had a roast in the oven so just sat it on a baking tray on top of the cooker with a damp tea towel on top to keep it moist. After a couple of hours it was well proved so I knocked it back, and 30 minutes later I put it in the oven.
The scorched bits were the best, it went down very well, perfect.
Everyone should try this because if I can do it, anyone can.
